Sophocles (George Adams translator)
First English language compilation of Sophocles' seven complete surviving plays -headlined by Oedipus Tyrannus.
Translator extraordinaire, George Adams, provided the first English Antigone, Oedipus at Colonus, and The Women of Trachis - the other four had been available as individual plays - Ajax and Electra in 1714, Tyrannus in 1715, and Philoctetes in 1725. (Walton, Translating Classical Plays)
Very Good in contemporary calf(different bindings so not a set), joints strengthened, a bit rubbed, some contemporary markings - complete with frontispiece of Sophocles in volume one. An important work and excitingly rare - only 1000 copies printed and no appearances in the auction records.
