First edition in English of one of philosophy’s landmark works.
 
Original publisher’s cloth - corners bumped, edges scuffed, covers a bit over-opened, general faint stains and wear on covers. Both volumes with discreet English bookseller sticker on front pastedown. Volume 1 spine head and foot with small tears and chips, some foxing in one gutter, approximately twenty pages with ink underlining and marginalia, rest of text clean. Volume 2 first few leaves with small edge tears and chips, text block entirely unopened and clean. 
 
Volume 1 is Very Good and Volume 2 is Near Fine - overall, a sound set of a publication well-represented in libraries, but exceptionally rare otherwise.
 
Throughout the 19th century, English translations of key German philosophical works trickled out through various articles and small publications. Hegel’s especially mind-twisting language and ideas required particular rigor and dedication from translators. While portions of his works appeared in English throughout the 19th century, this set marks the first full translation of the Phenomenology of Spirit - a work that’s both influenced later thinkers and achieved a cult following.
