Taras Bulba - Nikolai Gogol, Rare sightings

*SOLD*

The two first separate book editions of a Nikolai Gogol masterpiece. A work that made Hemingway’s list of top 10 greatest books.

Taras Bulba

New York, 1886

The first English language appearance was in 1860’s Cossack Tales, followed by this American standalone edition in 1886, translated by Isabel Hapgood. The sheets from the American edition were sent to England for the first British edition in 1887. All early English translations are rare.

Publisher's red cloth with large gilt armorial design on front cover. The larger design seemingly rarer than bindings with the smaller armorial logo. Spine slightly faded, book with slight lean, ends a bit frayed, top edge dusty, covers with general wear. Bookseller sticker with light pencil notations and discreet contemporary owner signature, else internally clean. Overall, a Very Good copy.
