*SOLD*

Rob Roy.
Sir Walter Scott
Edinburgh, 1818[1817]

3 volumes, 12mo. First edition, first issue(signature H2 mis–signed 2H on p. 177 in first volume). Complete with the scarce half–titles, 4pp. author’s advertisement in first volume, fly-titles. Original publisher’s paper–backed blue-grey boards, spine titles and volume numbers in contemporary manuscript, uncut. Joints starting with some separation and chipping along hinges, moreso on volume 1. Some general smudging, all rather standard for board survivals. Contents quite clean. A nice copy, Very Good - there’s always something very captivating about boards. Housed in a custom clamshell box.

This sixth book of the Waverly Novels was a massive bestseller upon publication so first editions generally abound the market, but complete survivals in original boards are scarce.

“Like Waverley, Rob Roy is a story of clashing cultures, this time against the backdrop of the first Jacobite rebellion of 1715, when Jacobite pretender James Francis Edward Stuart was trying to regain the throne of his deposed father, James II & VII. The protagonist, Francis Osbaldistone, a young man without firm allegiances, finds his path as he encounters Jacobites, Hanoverians and, of course, the courageous Highlander Rob Roy.”(History Extra)
