Publisher's original gray wood-effect boards, front cover gilt-lettered. Covers a bit discolored, some marks and light rubbing, else Very Good. Text largely clean with some occasional marginal toning. Second edition in English. Published by the Brotherhood Publishing Company to raise funds for the Doukhobors, a Russian pacifist group seeking religious freedom in Canada. Brotherhood published the first edition as a 3 volume set in April 1899 through March 1900, and this edition was bound from the remaining sheets and published as one volume in June 1900. 

Tolstoy's last novel - he became more erratic and enigmatic at the end of his life, but it didn't dampen the flames of his genius.
