Lady Chatterley's Lover
D.H. Lawrence
Florence, 1928
First edition, second issue - often called the “cheap paper issue.” One of a mere 200 copies.
The first printing of Lady Chatterley’s Lover occurred between April and June 1928 in a run of 1000 numbered and signed copies. As the year progressed, police raids and customs interceptions became more frequent and successful. Probably towards the end of November, with the first printing nearly sold out and Lawrence keen to undercut the increasing numbers of piracies, he brought out this small publication of 200 copies on common paper printed from the type used earlier that year. It was all but sold out by the end of December. (Roberts A42b)
Original mulberry wrappers, uncut, small closed tear at upper spine else a Fine, bright copy. Housed in a slipcase. A fragile book that's difficult to find in this excellent condition.
A book of importance for the lasting role it played in the sexual and free speech revolutions of the 20th century.
