Boston, 1882
One of only 50 copies of Lincoln's biography penned by his secretary, John Nicolay. Of the fifty printed in 1882 to secure copyright for Encyclopedia Britannica, ten were known to be destroyed. One copy appeared in a dealer catalog from 1952. Then you have to go back to the 1920s and earlier to see any at auction. Scarce.
Light soiling along the edges of the cover. Shadow of bookplate and paperclip. Small split to front wrapper joint. Leaves moderately age toned, but quite clean. A Very Good, sound copy of an extremely fragile title. Chemised in custom half leather slipcase. Precedes the common 10 volume biography of 1890.
From the library of Henry Poor, noted turn of the century banker, broker, and founder of the firm that would become Standard and Poor's.
